RECORDS MADE TO BE BROKEN:
ARE YOU CIRRUS?!
1884 Of the 30 houses in Oakville, IN, only 3 were left standing after an F5 (estimated) tornado leveled the town. Meteorologists at the time felt it was one of the most intense tornadoes ever recorded. Pieces of obliterated farms were found four miles away. Eight people were killed, mostly children.
1987 A tornado touched down briefly during a snow squall on the south shore of White Fish Bay on Lake Superior. A mobile home had its roof ripped off and insulation sucked from the walls.
1960 TIROS I, the very first weather satellite, was launched from Cape Canaveral.
SPRING SPORTS QUESTIONS:
It’s spring, the season of perpetual sports delays… at least around my house. Clients have the option of adding their own hourly planners to keep tabs on the days.
The weather pattern is about to make a pretty sharp turn across the country. California starts the week with unusual October heat, including highs well into the 90s and even lower 100s in the Central Valley. Meanwhile, much cooler fall air has reached the Great Lakes and Northeast. The Gulf Coast and Southeast stay unsettled, and there’s that record to watch: a tropical depression is likely to develop over the Gulf this week and could strengthen as it moves northeast. If it becomes a hurricane after the 8th, 2026 will have the latest-first hurricane in the Atlantic Basin record.
